The standard we build toward
This site is built toward the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA. That is the standard we test against as we build and change the site.
What that looks like here
- Every page has one main heading, a logical heading order, and a skip link to the main content as the first thing a keyboard reaches.
- Everything works with a keyboard, with a visible focus outline. The menu on phones traps focus while open, closes with Escape, and returns focus to the button.
- Every form field has a visible label. Errors are written as sentences, tied to the field, and the first one gets focus when you submit.
- Images have text alternatives; decorative images are skipped by screen readers. Member logos use the business name.
- Text and controls meet the contrast levels in the standard. Where the chamber's orange is used, white text on it is kept to large sizes, and body text uses a slightly deeper teal than the logo so it passes.
- Buttons and links are at least 44 pixels tall on phones.
- The animated chamber name on the home page pauses on hover, has a pause button for keyboard users, and does not move for people who have asked their device for reduced motion.
- Status changes in the member portal (saved, pending, approved) are announced to screen readers.
- Text can be resized to 200 percent without losing content, and the site works at phone widths without sideways scrolling.
What we know is imperfect
- Partner logos on the home and members pages come from the chamber's previous website, and some file names are the only description we have for them. The chamber is replacing them with logos and names supplied by each partner.
- Event registration and tickets happen on an outside registration service's pages, which we do not control.
- Member-uploaded photos get the description the member writes; some may be brief.
- The spam-prevention badge on forms is provided by an outside service and its contrast is set by that service.
